Dare Day!

6/1/2016

Rise and shine, everyone! It is another day.   This day is definitely a call to action, because today is “Dare Day - a Challenging Day”.  Haman's Highlights brings you      Dare Day, which is always on June 1, is a day to challenge someone, and to do a dare yourself. It's a day that daredevils truly relish. Today is definitely a call to action. It is not a day for procrastinators or for hesitation.  Dares take all forms and shapes. The type of dare is almost limitless. Whether it is a prank, a challenge to accomplish something, or a personal action (like asking someone out on a date), this is the day to make the dare. And, it’s the day to do the dare. [I] do suggest that dares be safe, and of course, legal....
Daring to the max: To dare someone to do something risky or challenging is one thing. Declaring the "double dog dare" heightens the challenge. The highest degree of challenge is to "triple dog dare" someone. It should not be used lightly, or frequently.
The most important DARE: [I] believe the most important dare is the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.

I "double dog dare" you to have a great day!

Good day, everyone!  Haman’s Highlights here.  Get ready to volunteer because April is Volunteer Recognition Month!  Volunteer Recognition Day, which is April 20th, honors the legions of volunteers who dedicate themselves to causes and helping others. They are making big and small differences in the lives of millions of people all over the world. They are saving lives. They are improving lives and providing comfort. They assist people, animals, and nature.  Most volunteers do not ask for recognition. They just want to help and to "give back" where they can.

Dogs are adorable!

Good day, everyone!  It is another lovely day in the neighborhood.  This morning I found an interesting article on MentalFloss.com; this one’s for all you dog lovers out there.
Are you curious to find out why dogs tilt their heads?  Sure, we know that dogs tilting their heads are adorable, but have you ever wondered WHY they do it? I would love to keep thinking that dogs tilt their heads at me because they are simply trying to earn my love and adoration, WHICH THEY DO EVERY SINGLE TIME, but that really isn’t the real reason. The real reason is even CUTER!  According to Mental Floss, dogs are actually tilting their heads in such a way to empathize with you, or at least try to (which, yeah, is pretty adorable). This makes sense. Most of us who have had dogs in our lives know that they are particularly good at reading how you are feeling.  You know when you’re sick and your dog will cuddle up with you? Or when you’re crying and your dog is the only one there for you and they’ll whimper at you as if to say, “Your sorrow is MY sorrow!”? That whole “sixth sense” in dogs (and lots of other animals) seems really real.  They just obviously have to express themselves in different ways.
When a dog tilts his or her head to the side, he/she is simply conveying that they are listening and empathizing with you, silly human!

Panic Day!

Good morning, everyone! Holy cow!  How about this March weather?
Try to stay calm. Take a deep breath. For today is Panic Day. Can you handle today? Good, we were worried for a moment.  Hopefully, everything is going just swell in your life, and you have no need for this day. But, if problems and troubles are looming, try to hold off hitting the panic button until this day arrives.
Don't worry. Don't fret. and, above all, don't panic. However, if ever there was a day to panic, today is that day. I picked out a good movie to watch for panic day:  10 Cloverfield Lane.  It is about a woman who wakes up after an accident and finds herself locked in a cellar with a doomsday prepper.  He tells her that he saved her life and that the world outside is uninhabitable following an apocalyptic catastrophe. She doesn't know what to believe, but decides that she has to escape.

Chocolate Cake day!

Everyone with a sweet tooth is going to love this day because today is “Chocolate Cake Day”!  Chocolate Cake Day is a chocolate lover’s delight and a day to eat cake.
The only reference to Chocolate Day on the Internet is from E-card and calendar websites. This might lead you to conclude that this is a day for (and by) the E-card companies, but, we know better. This day is for all chocolate lovers. And really, every day should be Chocolate Cake Day! Let’s travel back in history to January 27, because many important things happened on this day.

*Information taken from HolidayInsights.com*

On January 27, 1888, the National Geographic Society was founded in Washington, D.C.
On January 27, 1926, John Logie Baird, a Scottish inventor, gave the first public demonstration of a true television system in London, launching a revolution in communication and entertainment.
On January 27, 1970, John Lennon wrote and recorded “Instant Karma” in a single day, saying “I wrote it for breakfast, recorded it for lunch and we’re putting it out for dinner.”

I say, when it comes to television, our younger generation should read more, because if they don't know how to read, how will they ever know what is on TV? ;)

Have a nice day everyone!  ~Lynn~

Good day, everyone!  Lynn Haman reporting to you.
Thanksgiving has come and gone, but it’s the time of year when we give thanks for all that we have.  There is no better person to give thanks to than Lori Petrick.  Lori worked at Vocational Rehabilitation Services for 15 years and has helped out many people in the town of Grand Forks, North Dakota.
This November, the town of Grand Forks suffered a big loss.  Lori moved to Colorado.  We will all miss her very much, and we wish her well in her new home.  This is Lynn Haman signing out.  Have a good day.  Thank you, Lori.  You will be missed.

On a side note, I have a little joke for you -
Last week my grandmother got her first computer, I asked her how it was going? She said “great, but the darn computer keeps saying I got mail.  I went outside five times and checked the mail box and there was nothing there"!

This is it, true believers.  We counted down the strangest jobs of all time, and now it’s finally here!
#1 Slinger
A slinger was a man trained to use the sling. The sling was an essential part of roman military strategy because it was more effective (both in distance and damage) than an arrow. As a child, slingers-in-training, would be required to kill their dinner – no kill, no food. It was an extremely good way to get youth trained quickly. The slinger could throw stones up to one pound in weight, and they could be used accurately up to 200 meters.

And there you have it folks the number one strangest job in history.  This is Lynn Haman saying have a good day and a pleasant tomorrow!

Toad doctor

Good day, true believers!  This is Lynn Haman at Success Unlimited, searching for dirty, nasty jobs every day that will make you and I respect our jobs just a little bit more. Haman’s Highlights brings you “Just Another Reason to Love Your Job”.  Just a couple of months ago we started our incredible quest for the top ten strangest jobs in history:
#2 Toad Doctor
According to Wikipedia, toad doctors were practitioners of a specific tradition of medicinal folk magic, operating in western England until the end of the 19th century. Their main concern was healing scrofula (then called “the King’s Evil,” a skin disease), though they were also believed to cure other ailments including those resulting from witchcraft. They cured the sick by placing a live toad, or the leg of one, in a muslin bag and hanging it around the sick person’s neck. Needless to say this job would also require growing or gathering up a large collection of toads, and in the case of doctors who used just the leg, chopping their legs off to give to their patients.
Tune in next month to find out the #1 strangest job in history.  Until then, this is Lynn Haman, saying good day and a nice tomorrow.

Hello... my name is Lynn, and I work at the UND Wellness Center.  I work here for four hours and then I work out.  When I work out, I am always in a hurry and trying to get done fast.  I stop and ask myself, "why"?  I mean, this is where I want to be, with all the state of the art workout equipment, free internet, great people to meet and word with, excellent transportation, with busses picking you up & dropping you off right in front of the door.  To me, this place is like a second home.
